Overview

nRelate was a New York City-based technology company that created and offered a content recommendation platform to help its network of 100,000+ online publishers increase traffic and revenue through targeted article recommendations. Through the nRelate publisher network, content marketers reached audiences uniquely engaged with content they trusted.

The Challenge

nRelate launched in 2009 out of the NYU-Polytech Incubator. At the time, there were several other content recommendation companies emerging in the online publishing/advertising space. Indicate Media began a strategic relations campaign in 2011 focused on educating relevant reporters and industry influencers about the rapidly growing content recommendation space and promoting nRelate among the industry players.

In 2012, nRelate was acquired by Ask.com, a division of IAC/InterActiveCorp (Nasdaq: IACI). In 2014, nRelate re-engaged with Indicate Media to promote its new publisher tool, nControl as part of a larger public relations/educational campaign centered around cleaning up the content recommendation space, which had gone in the wrong direction over the years. In 2015, IAC decided to fold nRelate’s technology into its reference-style content properties and nRelate needed to properly communicate the transition to existing users.

The Solution

During the 2014 – 2015 “Content Cleanup Campaign,” Indicate Media executed strategic outreach to relevant national and local media, bloggers, online publications and industry analysts, resulting in a wide variety of coverage for nControl and the larger mission across outlets including among others: AdAge, Forbes, MediaPost, AdExchanger, Inc., Contently, Xconomy, and EContent. The media coverage helped raise awareness among the industry (media, publishers, marketers, consumers) about where the space had taken a wrong turn and what was needed to right the ship to benefit all parties.
